Occupation.

Coir making is a traditional craft predominantly practiced in the Indian state of Kerala, particularly in regions like Alappuzha, Kollam, and Thiruvananthapuram. Munroe Island, located in Kollam district, is renowned for its coir industry. The coir industry not only contributes to the local economy but also preserves traditional crafts and sustains livelihoods in regions like Munroe Island.

Coir Making:

  1. Raw Material: Coir is made from the husk of coconuts. Coconut husks are soaked in water to soften them, making it easier to separate the fibers.
  2. Fiber Extraction: After soaking, the fibers are extracted from the husks using a process called “retting.” This involves either natural retting (soaking in water for several months) or mechanical retting (using machines to extract fibers).
  3. Spinning: The extracted fibers are then spun into yarn using traditional spinning wheels or modern machinery.
  4. Weaving: Coir yarn is woven into mats, ropes, brushes, and various other products using handlooms or mechanized looms.
  5. Dyeing and Finishing: Some products may undergo dyeing processes to add color, followed by finishing processes to enhance durability and appearance.
